Over the weekend, Preston had a conversation with Mima (my mother), he explained to her that he realizes how loved he is. He went down a list his family members and concluded with "oh and Mima, I love me". This impacted me so much, because although my son is shown tons of love from myself and the people surrounding him, I don't know if I ever directly told him that he should love himself. I mean, he's 3, right? So, I pondered a bit and had to pray and thank Jesus. As a parent, you worry about so many different topics. Self-esteem, self-worth, independence, ambition, discipline, SELF-LOVE, the list goes on and on. You have to face the truth, that no matter how much you want to protect and shelter them they will be exposed to certain situations that are out of your control. Believe it or not, I started thinking about all of this while he was still in my womb. -I can't be the only one? I mean my mind just raced with possibilities of how my child could turn out (good and bad).
Raising another human being is one of the toughest jobs in the world, I'm learning as I go and WOW, this is intense! One valuable lesson I learned is that it is never too early to speak about self-love. The children of today have such an awareness- sometimes for all of the wrong things. Let's bring it back to the basics. LOVE. Who knew that my 3 year old could teach me something? <3
